| The Nantahala River is located in the Great Smoky Mountain's Nantahala National Forest at base of the Nantahala Gorge. Just south of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park the river is the most popular whitewater rafting river in the United States. Nantahala has other attractions for the young and young at heart. The Great
Smoky Mountain Railroad runs along side of the Nantahala River and sits
in the middle of its excursions depots. Pick one of its four departure
points for a ride through the scenic foothills of the Smoky Mountains of
Western North Carolina with a view of forests, country sides and rivers.
Take a day's excursion to Fontana Lake to see the highest Dam in eastern
America - an engineering masterpiece or spend the day in Cherokee, NC at
the Oconaluftee Indian Village where the past comes alive at this authentic
recreation of an 18th century Cherokee Indian community. Maybe your idea
of fun is the newly built Harrah's Casino in Cherokee or Ghost Town In
the Sky for the atmosphere of the Old West and the thrill of the world's
most unusual roller coaster.
